MADISON, S.D. – Zach Ely (offense) and Ben Kullos (defense) of Dakota State (S.D.) and Thomas Cortez of Valley City State (N.D.) were listed in the fourth North Star Athletic Association football weekly honors, announced Monday.
NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Zach Ely – Dakota State (S.D.) – 6'0", 185 lbs., Junior, wide receiver – Colton, S.D. – Ely had an impressive night in Dakota State's first-ever NSAA football victory at Presentation (S.D.) on Sept. 21, rallying from behind for a 35-28 conference win. After the opening kickoff, Ely caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from Cole Whisenhunt on the very first play of the game to give DSU a 7-0 lead. He recorded his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter with a 40-yard touchdown pass (21-14 DSU lead). Trailing 28-21 in the late third quarter, a key play that included Ely's 50-yard reception highlighted DSU's scoring drive to tie the game at 28-28. Ely scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 14-yard touchdown pass. Overall in the game, Ely had 5 catches for 179 yards (35.8 yards per catch). Ely's 179 receiving yards is his career-high at Dakota State along with three touchdown receptions.
NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Ben Kullos – Dakota State (S.D.) – 5'9", 205 lbs., Sophomore, linebacker – Perioa, Ariz. – Kullos had eight tackles including two tackles-for-loss in Trojans' 35-28 NSAA conference victory at Presentation (S.D.) on Sept. 21. He had two-tackles-for-loss for a total of six yards and two quarterback sacks. Kullos recorded three solo tackles and five assist tackles in DSU's road victory.
NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Thomas Cortez – Valley City State (N.D.) – 6'0", 177 lbs., Sophomore, kicker – Haiku, Hawaii – Cortez went perfect in his PAT kicking in 66-6 home rout over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Sept. 21. He was 7-for-7 on PAT extra point attempts. Cortez recorded nine kick-offs and amassed a total of 541 yards (60.1 yards per kick-off), including three touchbacks. In addition, he recorded two tackles during the kick-offs. Cortez earned his weekly honor for the second time this season.
Mayville State will host Jamestown (N.D.) in their first-ever North Star Athletic Association conference football game on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. in Mayville, N.D. Presentation (S.D.) concludes their four-game home stand Saturday as they welcome Trinity Bible (N.D.) in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. in Aberdeen. Dakota State returns home Saturday after playing two straight NSAA road games. The Trojans begin their two-game home stand versus Concordia (Neb.) with a kick-off slated for 4 p.m. Valley City State is idle this week.
