MADISON, S.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) won the battle of the top two teams in the first-ever North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament Tuesday evening. The Comets defeated the second-seeded Jamestown (N.D.) by the score of 82-73 at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D.
The Comets (No. 11 in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll) and Jimmies (No. 3 in the national poll) battled back-and-forth through 10 ties and 12 lead changes in the game. Trailing 69-68 with 3:01 remaining in the game, Mayville State closed the game with a 14-4 scoring run for a nine-point victory.
Both Mayville State and Jamestown are most likely will earn an at-large bid for the upcoming NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa on March 12-18. The NAIA will be holding a Selection Show on Wednesday evening (March 5) to announce the pairings (32 teams) for the national tournament. The women's segment will air at 7 p.m. (Central Standard Time) with the video appearing on www.naia.org.
