MADISON, S.D. – Top-seeded Jamestown (N.D.) claimed the first-ever North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Postseason Conference Tournament Monday evening at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. The Jimmies survived a furious late comeback by No. 2 seed Dakota State (S.D.) and held on to a 72-67 thrilling victory.
UJ led the game by the score of 68-54 after Mark Hoge nailed down a pair of free-throws with 1:25 remaining in the game. The Trojans roared back by scoring 13 straight points to cut Jamestown's lead to 68-67 with 19.5 seconds left in the game. During that scoring outburst, DSU was 5-for-6 from the field - including make four straight baskets - while the Jimmies missed a free-throw and committed three consecutive turnovers.
Jamestown closed the game as Hoge made all four free-throw attempts to secure the first-ever North Star conference championship.
The Jimmies ended their season with an overall record of 17-12, winning 12 games of the last 13 games of the season. UJ won both NSAA regular-season title outright and postseason conference tournament championship. Dakota State finished their 2013-14 campaign with an overall record of 15-15 (loss snapped Trojans' five-game winning streak) and recorded a 6-2 conference record in the North Star.
